WELL-BEING
Through access to pet therapy, tutoring, summer camp, cooking workshops, sports & other activities, you help improve the mental and physical well-being of children in Batshaw’s care and allow them to get back to being kids.
THERAPY
While various therapies (psychological, speech, occupational and physiotherapy) are available through the public system, the wait time can often be long. This delay can be very harmful for children waiting for therapy, when early intervention is key. On the recommendation of the social worker, the Foundation will pay for certain therapies when there is no support through the public system.
SPORTS & RECREATION
Therapeutic activities such as sports and cultural activities, or special events have also proven to be beneficial to children and youth in difficulty, The Foundation funds activities recommended by the social worker to improve communication skills, self-esteem, social development, mental and physical health, to name a few. For families assisted by social services, activities provide the chance for positive interaction between parent and child, which bonds family members and strengthens unity. Also, separate activities provide a break for both parent and child, which reduces stress in the home.
COOKING WORKSHOPS
Since 2009 Batshaw Centres Agency has offered cooking workshops to teach children at risk aged 6-18 years how to prepare healthy and simple meals. These classes allow youths to learn skills that will help them to be more self-sufficient, eat better, and save money - all of the while promoting healthier lifestyles.
The Ateliers du Frère Toc and La Tablée des Chefs cooking workshop is one of different types of cooking programs we offer to our youth. Most of the cooking programs are taught by a professional chef and or an educator on a weekly basis helping over 50 youth a year.
CAMP WEREDALE
A summer camp experience is beneficial to many children. Batshaw Centres clients with few or no behavioural problems can go to existing community camps. Camp Weredale specializes in children who have such problems and need extra supervision. Staff is trained, counsellor/camper ratios are lower, and camp staff confer with Batshaw Centres staff when problems arise to help the child remain at the camp. This type of camp is more expensive to operate than camps for average kids.
